           Medical Mission 2023

By: Lion Mark Bamba, MJF

For the past 45 days in the Philippines we have been imbedded with great charity projects. This trip started in Pampanga with a visit to one of our adopted schools - Eucharistic Hope and Kindness Home for abused girls where we gave them food supplies, new shoes, monetary donation, Jollibee meals, and children’s vitamins. Next was a joint project with Angeles City Clark Balibago Lions Club of Pres Janine Bravo and VP Raffy Garcia where Aeta indigenous people were picked up and bused to Polytechnic University in Clark where we provided them dental care, medical checkups, diabetic screening, giveaways, medicines, and food. This was observed by a number of other Lions Clubs around the area along with PID Michael So. This trip would have been tremendous already but we were not even halfway. The third segment had us partnering with Baguio City Host Lions Club headed by President Perlita Cuyan and IPP Nikko Go. We provided feeding, dental kits plus school supplies giveaways at Dontogan Elementary School in Baguio. This was followed by a full medical mission right in the heart of La Trinidad Benguet in the grounds of the Mayors Office who welcomed us with open arms!! We not only provided medical checkups, vision check, feeding, and medicines - we also provided free dental fillings, cleaning, and extraction services. The very next day, we headed to Pugo La Union accompanied by the same successful dental team of 14 professionals headed by DDS Jonathan Pangan and our very own Doc Lynn Ventura who headed a group of 27 doctors. Also present were the same Opthamolgy group who provided vision services. Our visit to Pugo resulted in 20 free cataract surgeries being provided to the very poor plus over 600 dental patients served and several hundred adult and children receiving medical attention. Then we were off to Davao for the last third of our intended missions. Disregard stomach issues, lack of sleep and running on adrenaline, we forged on with our next and very familiar partners in Mt Apo Lions Club headed by Pres Doc Helen Helen G. Delima where we served a remote village at the foot of Mt Apo providing the same dental, medical, vision, and diabetic screening services . We also visited our other adopted school- Davao School for The Blind where we gave an impactful monetary donation. We also visited Padre Pio Orphanage where we were serenaded by songs and music from both children and staff. We provided them with food and a small monetary donation. All that has left us energized and so looking forward to our next mission tentatively scheduled for February or March 2025. Thank you to President Janine Bravo and VP Raffy Garcia of ACCBLC, President Perlita Cuyan and IPP Nikko Go of BCHLC, President Doc Helen Delima of DC Mt Apo LC, and the ever hard working Maharlikans LEF by President Frank Zabal, this was truly a memorable trip for all!!!

In this time of great need, Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) is awarding grants to make sure Lions are there to help provide immediate relief to those struggling to meet their most basic needs, and Lions around the world are uniting through kindness to help the people who desperately need it.

This is how you can help.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

More than 1 million COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States over the last 7 days.

As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.

Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.

Governor Newsom declares emergency Tuesday amid wildfires, power shortages:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday declared a state of emergency due to raging across the state.

His announcement comes amid a scorching that has helped spark and spread multiple large blazes, including in, Nevada and Monterey counties, and put a severe strain on the state's power grid, causing California's first rolling blackouts in 19 years.

“We are deploying every resource available to keep communities safe as California battles fires across the state during these extreme conditions,” said Governor Newsom. “California and its federal and local partners are working in lockstep to meet the challenge and remain vigilant in the face of continued dangerous weather conditions.”

          THE ‘CROWNED” KING OF VIRUSES
             Coronavirus Disease 2019
            By: Jose D. Villarica, M.D.

In an effort to prevent the seemingly unstoppable advance of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease
2019) to epidemic/pandemic proportions, the United States CDC/WHO (Center of Disease
Control and Prevention/World Organization) has issued the following guidelines for
implementation.
The goals of this guidance are: (1) to protect people attending and working at the event and the
local community from COVID-19 infection; and (2) to reduce community transmission and
introduction of COVID-19 into new communities.

To organizers of mass gatherings (events including religious services where people are within an
arm’s length of each other, they do not include typical office environments or stores) and large
community events attended by people from multiple communities getting in close contact with
each other and have a potential to increase COVID-19 transmission, one method to slow the
spread of respiratory virus infections, including COVID-19, IS BY INCREASING SOCIAL DISTANCING
(reduce close contact at least by an arm’s length).

Event organizers should collaborate and coordinate with community partners, including the  local public health department;
hotels where participants are staying; airlines; trains; and bus conveyances (mass transit); the
event venue; and other event partners.
Use event messaging or communication to update daily preventive health matters to participants
and staff, to wit:
- Stay home when you are sick, except to get ...
